Your baby will grow and develop every day.  Sometimes it’s hard to believe how fast they change.  That’s why it’s so important not to overlook the importance of their dental visits.  It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that a child be seen by the dentist by the time their first tooth appears.  This should be no later than age one.  Finding a comfortable “dental home” at a young age not only sets them on the path to optimum dental health but also eliminates fear of the dental office.  
 
At their first visit, proper homecare and nutrition will be addressed.  Parents will be instructed on how to care for their child’s teeth thus avoiding many future problems.  Prevention and education are our two main priorities.  
 
At regular checkups, children will receive a cleaning, exam to identify cavities, developmental problems and fluoride treatments if needed.  Poor dental health can result in serious consequences such as poor nutrition, health problems and speech delays.

At what age should parents start brushing their child’s teeth?  The sooner the better! Starting at birth, clean your child’s gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water. As soon as the teeth begin to appear, start brushing twice daily using fluoridated toothpaste and a soft, age-appropriate sized toothbrush up until the age of 2. For the 2-5 year old, dispense a “pea-size” amount of toothpaste and perform or assist your child’s toothbrushing. Remember that young children do not have the ability to brush their teeth effectively and you should help them and also model proper brushing by cleaning your own teeth so they can watch.
